JUDGING CONCERNS OF THE BORDER
COLLIE |
Return to Judge Education Central |
When evaluating the Border Collie in the ring, we
would like to bring the following items to your attention.
- Remember this is first and foremost an agile,
working breed and dogs should be presented in fit, hard working condition
- Remember correct proportion is key - 9:10
length of leg from ground to elbow should be slightly greater than from elbow
to withers (don’t be afraid to move hair to see proportions)
- Moderation and balance is important, not to be
overdone in bone and coat
- Finer bone and less coat is preferred over too
much bone and coat
- Back is level to slightly arched loin, loin
that is muscular, deep, short and with a slight but distinct tuck up
- Slightly cow hocked while standing is
permissible, should be correct going away (think cutting horse-ready to go in
any direction sheep do)
- Any color of coat, eye color or ear carriage
is correct
- ”Happy tail” is common, tail should be down at
rest
SERIOUS FAULTS
- Incorrect proportions and too short on leg
- Overly trimmed or sculpted coat, aside from
tiding up feet and hocks
