JUDGING CONCERNS OF THE BORDER COLLIE

Return to Judge Education Central

When evaluating the Border Collie in the ring, we would like to bring the following items to your attention.

  • Remember this is first and foremost an agile, working breed and dogs should be presented in fit, hard working condition
  • Remember correct proportion is key - 9:10  length of leg from ground to elbow should be slightly greater than from elbow to withers (don’t be afraid to move hair to see proportions)
  • Moderation and balance is important, not to be overdone in bone and coat
  • Finer bone and less coat is preferred over too much bone and coat
  • Back is level to slightly arched loin, loin that is muscular, deep, short and with a slight but distinct tuck up
  • Slightly cow hocked while standing is permissible, should be correct going away (think cutting horse-ready to go in any direction sheep do)
  • Any color of coat, eye color or ear carriage is correct
  • ”Happy tail” is common, tail should be down at rest

SERIOUS FAULTS

  • Incorrect proportions and too short on leg
  • Overly trimmed or sculpted coat, aside from tiding up feet and hocks
