Return to Judge's Selection Process

The BCSA membership has voiced desire to have input into selection of National Specialty judges. The National Specialty Judge Selection Policy has been designed to provide members a meaningful voice while still allowing the Board to control the process. The policy recognizes the need for the Board of Directors to maintain control over the Club’s National Specialty budget. The policy also provides the Board the ability to ensure that the mission and objectives of the Club will be served by the judges it hires.

Nominations for judges (Conformation, Sweepstakes, Obedience, Herding, Rally, and Tracking), as applicable, will be solicited from the General Membership. Each BCSA member will be allowed to nominate three judges in each venue.

Proposed judges must be licensed (except puppy Sweepstakes) and receive a minimum of five nominations from the General Membership to be considered for judging at the BCSA National Specialty. In the event that less than 10 judges in each venue receive a minimum of five nominations, the 10 nominees with the most votes from the General Membership will be considered. The 10 judges in each venue who receive the most nominations will be sent questionnaires inquiring as to availability, cost, and details regarding their qualifications (Appendices A-G).

The Board of Directors will then select six of the 10 nominated candidates for Conformation, Sweepstakes, Obedience, Rally, and Tracking and eight of the 10 nominated candidates for herding from the nominees with the most votes as proposed by the General Membership. The Board’s selection shall be based primarily on the number of votes received from the General Membership, but also on qualifications of the judges as detailed in the completed questionnaire, availability, and cost.

The six finalists selected for Conformation, Sweepstakes, Obedience, Rally, and Tracking and the eight finalists selected for herding will be published in Borderlines, along with a copy of their responses to the questionnaires. Concurrently, the names of the 10 judge nominees in each venue with the most nomination votes from the General Membership shall be published in Borderlines, along with the number of votes they received. The General Membership will then vote for three of the candidates in each venue and the candidate(s) with the most votes in each venue will be selected to judge at the National Specialty Show. The vote will occur online, with an option to mail a ballot for members without internet access, and will be tallied by the Judge Selection Committee and reported to the Board of Directors. Once established, the voting would occur in July of the year prior to the Specialty.
