CHRIS ZINK - FATE NA NAJ

Return to Spotlight on Rescues

I got my BC, Fate, in a shelter in Lexington VA when I was at CleanRun camp in 2000. She had hardly any hair, and to be honest at first I thought that she was a Springer Spaniel cross. When I opened the gate to her pen, she bounded out and jumped up on me, wrapping her front legs around my waist and burying her head in my stomach. That just melted me!

The shelter had a night drop box where people could drop off dogs anonymously. Fate was dropped off there, so I knew nothing about her when I got her.

After she was spayed, I brought her home and put her on a good diet. Within a very short time she had grown a lush coat. She came with two problems that were easily fixed. One was that she was not house trained for bowel movements. One a week of a regular schedule and that was fixed. The other thing was that she was a serious car chaser. I wonder if perhaps she got lost doing that and a stranger dropped her off at the box. I got some help from friends to fix that by tempting her and then reinforcing her recall and she hasn't chased cars again.

Fate now competes in agility (where she has her NA and NAJ and has almost completed her OA, OAJ and AD). She is also training in herding. I just got 4 sheep for her to work - a major commitment, but she is worth it!

We also plan to train in obedience, but haven't done much yet. And we have tried tracking, but she is totally useless at it! Well, can't be great at everything. Most of all, she is fun and very loving. Her favorite thing is to wait until someone sits down, then slide up onto their lap like a snake. She has never met the dog or person she doesn't like.

Here are pictures of us doing agility and another just showing her typical self.

All the best;
