JANET MCLENDON - TYLER HS

Return to Spotlight on Rescues

I thought I'd tell you about my sweet boy Tyler....

This is my rescue boy Tyler. I adopted him from a rescue group called BONES located in California. This photo is the one that was posted on the rescue group's website. After I saw his picture, I couldn't stop thinking about him, even though I wasn't planning to adopt another dog at the time-yeah right!

Tyler came to live with me June 6, 2003. He was around 2 1/2 yrs old. In that time, he has learned that toys are fun, people food is really good and that learning new things is a great game! He is a dog that truly wants to please me. I've never had a dog that was so pleased when I told him that he did a good job.

Tyler is working in obedience, tracking (I'm hoping to get him certified this winter, then if we get lucky, he'll get into a test!) and herding. He's doing well in all of these areas, but herding is the only event he has competed in so far.

Tyler started his herding lessons with Debbie Pollard on a weekly basis in January 2004. With six months of lessons and being severely handler challenged, Ty was entered in his first herding trials. He completed his Herding Started title in his first three attempts. His third leg was with a lovely score of 97.5, which also earned him High In Trial!

I was so proud to see my boy, who has all the 'unknowns' by his name in the show catalog prove that he just needed a chance to show what he could do. I feel very fortunate that I saw that picture of Tyler when I 'wasn't really looking for a dog'!

A couple weeks ago, I took Ty to the veterinarian ophthalmologist to have his eyes CERF'd. The Dr. told me that he has early stage retinal degeneration in his right eye. At this time, none was detected in the left one. So, I'm not sure what the future holds for my boy competition wise, but he'll always be the world's best buddy no matter what!
