When
I was in 4-H as a 12 years old , I trained my first Guide Dog puppy. While
I was proud that my puppy was chosen to complete guide dog training, I was
also heartbroken to lose my treasured companion. I was delighted when my
mother bought me my own German Shepherd for my 13th birthday. Greta and I
were inseparable, and just 3 years later we went on to earn the coveted
Utility Dog degree. In 1970, I bought my first sheltie who would become
the start of "Westernesse" Shelties. I have bred and owner handled 12
breed champions, 7 U.D.s and a number of advanced Agility and Herding
titled shelties (including the first CH/HX sheltie).
My involvement in border
collies began in 1995, when BCs first became eligible to compete for AKC
conformation championships. I had always admired the breed, and leaped at
the opportunity to show a friend's Border Collies in the breed ring. In
1996, I imported an English BC, "Jamie". Jamie (DC Corinlea Secret Agent)
quickly finished his breed championship and went on to become one of the
breed's first Dual Champions, finishing his Herding Championship with
multiple High in Trials. Jamie was followed by "Joey" (DC Lydeardlea Angel
in Disguise). Like his cousin Jamie, Joey also gained his Dual
Championship with several High in Trials and a Group placement. Joey was
recently honored as a BCSA ROMX sire. I have bred multiple champion border
collies and have shown over 10 to their conformation championships. While
I treasure the working ability of our breed, I also believe that good
structure and conformation will allow the BC to have a long and productive
working career.
I sincerely appreciate the
opportunity given to me to judge Sweepstakes at the BCSA National and I
hope everyone has a fabulous time at the Specialty! |
